Jesus’ Model for Prayer

Matthew 6:5-8 is Jesus' instructions on prayer. In this passage, Jesus warns against a few problems we may have in prayer. In these verses, Jesus contrasts hypocritical public prayers with genuine private prayers. He instructs the disciples not to pray for the sake of being seen by others and not to use empty, repetitive phrases like the pagans do. Instead, He encourages personal, sincere prayer, emphasizing that God knows our needs even before we ask. This introduction to the Lord's Prayer sets the tone for approaching God with humility, sincerity, and faith rather than as a performance or a ritual. Join Jenny Randle as she unpacks the power of prayer in this Bible teaching from Matthew 6.

Three key lessons:

  • Prayer is not performance; it’s a supernatural positioning (Psalm 55:17, Acts 3:1, Matthew 6: 5, Matthew 6: 6, Mark 1:35)

  • Prayer is not manipulation; it’s an authentic moment to be in God’s presence (Matthew 6:7)

  • Prayer isn’t a monologue; it’s a dialogue (Matthew 6:9-13)

Prayer is about supernatural alignment with God’s perspective. Whether we pray for guidance, repentance, or intercession, we’re drawing closer to Him and gaining strength to live out the gospel.

This week, challenge yourself to make prayer a priority—whether it’s a simple conversation with God or a quiet moment of listening. It's not about getting the words right, but about showing up and trusting Holy Spirit to guide your prayers.
